Park Royal Skills Fair

Park Royal is the largest industrial estate in Western Europe; the site is home to around 2,000 businesses, around a quarter of them are involved in food.

Over the next 10 years this district will see some major changes coming into force with the creation of the HS2 and Crossrail ‘super transport hub’ at Old Oak Common station where it is predicted 250,000 commuters will be changing trains there a day.

In order to serve these changes the Mayor of London designated the site a Development Corporation in 2015, the same vehicle used to create the Olympic Park in the east of the city.

Early studies have shown Park Royal businesses in the future will create 65,000 jobs, around 10,000 of those will be based in this part of northwest London.

The Park Royal Business Group board, of which I am Co-Chair, is kick starting the employment process by organising the first Park Royal Skills Fair next Thursday at Abbey Manor in the heart of the estate.

Whether you are looking for your next career progression or are 16-25 looking for a first job, come to:

– find out about apprenticeship and job opportunities available with Park Royal businesses now

– try tasters of jobs at Park Royal and gain support for future career plans

– help businesses to access free local support to develop and recruit apprenticeships, provide training to their workforce and to fill vacancies.

The day also includes workshops, talks, networking opportunities, information from agencies such as Connexions, Jobcentre Plus and local colleges, CV writing skills, the chance to register for current vacancies and access advice on next steps into employment.

Park Royal Skills Fair is open to businesses seeking to recruit, to individuals seeking work or more information about opportunities and schools exploring options for students.

Fresh Banter with Giles Christopher, the food, drink and hospitality photographer

Giles and I met many years ago through his wife and business partner Abi, and since then we have all worked on a lot of jobs together and have spent a lot of time together socially chatting about business and life.

He got some great advice from his Dad about offering to do things nobody else likes to do at work and making himself a valuable team member and sound found he had multiple job offers …

He’s run his own business for over 20 years and we talk about how basic business skills should be part of the curriculum for everyone nowadays

He shares about the prep that goes into shoots and how technology has changed the job so much and how much time photographers now spend in post production too. And about the sheer weight of kit that he takes to ‘location’ shoots too.

Giles loves tech and is always pushing himself to learn new ways of doing things , or master new equipment and he also talks about keeping up with and ahead of that if you can

A really interesting insight into all that food and drink photography involves, and some great tips for podcasts and business blogs to watch out for too.

I’m really pleased we managed to book Giles for a chat in this last episode of series 3…
