From 1 January 2024, pre-packaged food sold in the UK must have a UK Food Business Operators business address on pack. The address needs to be a physical address where your business can be contacted by mail. You cannot use an email address, a PO box or phone number.
The address you use may be the importer or distributor. However, you may be at the beginning of a relationship with a distributor and don’t want to commit to having their address on all your packaging. Alternatively, you may sell direct to consumer, through online platforms, or are working with multiple distributors across different market sectors in the UK and don’t want to have to print or over label several addresses on all your packaging. An FBO address may be just what you need.
To operate in the UK, you need a Food Business Operator (FBO, sometimes referred to as a Responsible Food Business Operator RFBO) who will be the primary contact point for the authorities in case of Environmental Health or Trading Standards monitoring.
We are registered as a Food Business Operator (FBO) with our local authority and are now offering to help customers from outside the UK by being their FBO and letting them use our address on specific products.
Before you can apply our address to a product, we would require proof of compliance for each product and packaging/labelling for that product for the UK market. We can also arrange this for you (fees apply).
To use our address on your product packaging, monthly charges apply. Fees start from £20 a month for small businesses supplying or planning to supply less than 2000 units / year into the UK and are quoted on a case by case basis.
The charge is per product and applicable for 12 months or until the shelf life of the product expires (whichever is greater).
As the FBO if any monitoring is required or there are any issues with authorities, we will be the main point of contact. We will then work with you to communicate to the authorities to resolve the issue. Any work involved will be charged separately, using our standard day rates.
