A call for help from Shabnam Weber, Tea and Herbal Association of Canada

A couple of days ago, I received an email from Shabnam Weber at the Tea and Herbal Association of Canada, and I wanted to help spread the word.

Email below…

The power of the tea industry is in a collective voice. And to that end, we have an opportunity we are asking EVERYONE to jump on.

As you may know, Google dedicates its front page to major events, important dates etc. through something called a “Google Doodle”. These ‘doodles’ appear on the front search page of Google which dominates the world’s searches. Controlling 85% of the searches done worldwide, the impact of people seeing the ‘doodle’ is around 40,000 searches every second.

The Google team receives suggestions from around the world on which ‘doodle’ to consider. Their team then deliberates over the suggestions and compiles the chosen ones for the year. I should mention that their team also creates all the art work.

We ask that each of you submit an email to Google suggesting a tea theme for International Tea Day, May 21st, every year moving forward. I have sent the same ask to colleagues in the international community and encourage you to reach to everyone within your network to do the same.

We’ve drafted suggested wording below, should you want to use it.

Please send your email to: doodleproposals@google.com

Dear Google Doodle Team,

I am writing to offer a suggestion for the Google Doodle on May 21st, to be a celebration of International Tea Day. As you may be aware, this annual celebration is endorsed by the United Nations and passed by the General Assembly through Resolution 74/241 on December 19, 2019. It serves as a day to honour tea while encouraging collective actions to promote sustainable production and consumption.

The occasion provides an excellent opportunity to highlight the positive impact of tea in our lives and its significance beyond being a popular beverage (in fact, it is globally the second most consumed beverage after water).

I believe this theme aligns well with Google’s commitment to sustainability and global well-being. Your creative team has consistently created Google Doodles that bring attention to significant global issues through visually compelling images, and International Tea Day presents an opportunity to further this tradition. The imagery can include everything from bush to cup (tea bushes, pluckers, factory workers, retailers and tea drinkers themselves).

Thank you for considering this suggestion, and I look forward to the possibility of seeing a Google Doodle that not only celebrates International Tea Day, but showcases its journey from bush to cup.

Thank you for your time and creativity.

Sincerely,
xxx

In the spirity of collective voices, stay tuned for a promotional campaign we hope you’ll all incorporate into your marketing for this year’s International Tea Day, May 21st.

Best,

Shabnam Weber
